Meet Johann Jacob Eybelwieser, a Breslau Baroque painter
We cordially invite you to a meeting around the book “Johann Jacob Eybelwieser młodszy. Wrocławski malarz doby baroku” at the National Museum in Wrocław.
Barbara Andruszkiewicz will talk with Marek Kwaśny about the behind-the-scenes of the book’s creation and the curiosities of Baroque painting.
Baroque painting in Silesia is a phenomenon that never ceases to intrigue. The book “Johann Jacob Eybelwieser młodszy. Wrocławski malarz doby baroku,” presents to the world the silhouette of Johann Jacob Eybelwieser the younger, considered one of the leading and most prolific painters active in 18th century Breslau. Eybelwieser’s life and the organization of his workshop resemble the casus of the great master of an earlier generation — Michael Willmann, known as the Silesian Rembrandt.
Being a late Baroque artist required not only artistic talent, but also the instincts of a seasoned diplomat. The career development strategy of the artist, consciously building his position in Breslau society, had to take into account javelining between commissions from Protestant bourgeoisie and influential Catholic orders. Through a multifaceted analysis of the painting workshop and consideration of the commercial context, we can better understand the economic aspects of artistic production, including the rarely discussed issues of marketing and personal branding.
The pages of the book contain more than 260 illustrations and a clearly structured catalog of 230 works by the painter created from the beginning of his independent artistic career in 1699 until his death in 1744. It’s also an in-depth look at the master’s work – taking into account technological and iconographic aspects, history and circumstances of the works’ creation, so you can pinpoint their place in the artist’s overall oeuvre.

Why do we turn to magic and what do we not experience without writing?
We would like to invite you to the premiere meeting with dr Michał Rydlewski, author of the book “Magia i pismo. O dwóch odmianach komunikowania: obrazowym i pojęciowym”. A remarkable book published in the prestigious Golden Series of the University of Wrocław. Are we magical? Why do people turn to magic? What do we not experience without writing? We will seek answers to all these questions at the November meeting, which will be hosted by journalist Dominika Tworek.
Western culture today is turning to magic. But is this return surely a sign of its evolution? Or rather, evidence of cultural decay? What implications will this have for the way we participate in culture? Who will be the new capitalist-metamorphic entity? Are we really in for an age of magic?
“Magia i pismo” significantly expands the knowledge of the process of its umagicization taking place in Western culture. It is related to technological changes in the modern world, the departure of culture from writing as the main medium of communication, the bankruptcy of Reason, the development of capitalism and the loss of ontological security for humans. The humanities are also becoming magical, as exemplified by posthumanism and the new animism, which are not only ways of magically “knowing” reality, but project new patterns of being-in-the-world that take into account the presence of magic in it and, as it were, legitimize its perspective of looking at reality.
This is an eminently interdisciplinary book, the author moves seamlessly through the areas of cultural anthropology, philosophy, psychology, literary and media studies, showing the multifaceted nature of tracking magic from the perspective of these disciplines.

Book Fair in Katowice
The Publishing House team is gearing up for the Book Fair, which will be held this weekend in Katowice! Ahead of December’s Good Book Fair in Wrocław, this will be a good opportunity to meet readers and generate interest in WUWr’s offerings. Especially since there is a special “Spotkania z nauką” zone for science publishers in Katowice. The book “Piłka nożna na celowniku polityki,” edited by prof. Dariusz Wojtaszyn, should generate a lot of interest there. In the book you can find a lot of information about Ruch Chorzów, about soccer and national relations in Silesia, and most importantly – the history of Ernest Wilimowski, steeped in politics! A footballer of legend, representative of Poland (1934-1939) and the Third Reich (1941-1942)!
We recommend it to those interested: Piłka nożna na celowniku polityki Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Wrocławskiego
