Pietro Bembo. Na styku literackich tradycji
We highly recommend the latest publication by dr Daria Kowalczyk-Cantoro of the Department of Italian Studies at the UWr Institute of Romance Studies. The book “Pietro Bembo. Na styku literackich tradycji” will take you on a journey to the Renaissance world, where culture, art and politics were intertwined in one inspiring whole.
Pietro Bembo was one of the leading representatives of Italian humanism and the most important Renaissance thinkers. Because of the breadth of his interests, the multiple roles he played, and his extensive network of contacts, he was an exemplary representative of the era. Although, contrary to his father’s aspirations, he chose not to pursue a political career at any European court, his influence on the intellectual life of the era was significant. Bembo spoke in all the major debates of his time and launched a literary movement called Petrarchism. He contributed to the formation of the modern Italian language. Despite these achievements and a rich curriculum vitae – Bembo accommodated in than also a career as a cardinal and papal official, Knight of Malta, historian and poet – the Polish reader has so far been able to read relatively little about this figure. Daria Kowalczyk-Cantoro’s book is a historical and literary monograph of his life and works. The author treats the discussion of Bemba’s Latin and volgare-written works as a starting point for considering the entirety of his intellectual, philosophical and critical literary output. She also provides insight into his relationships with prominent figures of his time, such as Angelo Poliziano, Pico della Mirandola, Lucrezia Borgia, Maria Savorgnan and Clement Janicki. The book introduces the Polish reader to the eminent humanist, takes a closer look at the complex cultural contexts appearing at the intersection of several languages and literary traditions, and shows Bemba himself as an extremely creative and constantly searching author.
“Daria Kowalczyk-Cantoro’s work fills a gap in Polish research on Bemba’s works in Latin and Polish, with the former being evaluated and appreciated. The author shows the intertextual entanglement of Bemba’s works, reveals their ancient inspirations (works of Roman poets of the Augustan period) and uncovers her fascination with the works of the “three crowns” (Dante, Petrarca, Bocaccio). Kowalczyk-Cantoro also focuses on the way the masters are imitated and emulated, and notes Bemba’s inconsistency in respecting the rules (by alluding to the work of Dante, who, after all, did not fit into the strict imitative model presented in the pages of Prose della volgar lingua).” – reads the review by dr hab. Marta Wojtkowska- Maksymik, professor at the University of Warsaw.
