Among the latest book announcements of the University of Wrocław Press, there is an interdisciplinary study that combines history, law and sociology and presents the history of the Polish prison system from regaining independence in 1918 to contemporary efforts towards rehabilitation. It consists of 15 scientific articles devoted to various aspects of the functioning of the prison system in Poland.
Od izolacji do resocjalizacji. 100 lat historii więziennictwa w niepodległej Polsce. Wybrane aspekty. edited by prof. Grzegorz Strauchold from the Historical Institute, as well as prof. Jerzy Korczak, dr Rafał Nowakowski and dr Bartłomiej Perlak is a publication in which the authors analyze the legal, social and ideological changes shaping the penitentiary system. They show the evolution from a repressive model to a more humane approach. As we read in the review – it is a successful collection, bringing closer the meanders of the prison system in Poland in the 20th century. Each of the texts contributes to the expansion of knowledge about the conditions of penitentiary policy in the discussed period and the factors influencing its formula. From the presentation of architectural and urban conditions to the practical functioning of the prison system during World War II and in the years of the People’s Republic of Poland.

News on the Scientific Journals on the Web platform
Last week, the issue of the journal “Literatura i kultura popularna” for the year 2024 was published. In the reminiscence opening the 30th volume, the editors say goodbye to Dr. Jacek Ladorucki, a distinguished bibliologist from Łódź. The articles below are divided into four main parts. In the former, various texts of popular culture are viewed from non-obvious perspectives, for example, the Slovak contexts in Bram Stoker’s Dracula or the semanticization of the animal world in Czterej Pancerni i Pies. The second part focuses on fantasy literature, especially the practices of constructing (directly or indirectly) fictional worlds — for example, intertextual references in Polish translations of Tolkien’s works or the use of naturalistic poetics in George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire. The third group of texts describes various ways of engaging in a dialogue between popular culture and reality, for example, the second life of Stanisław Wokulski in Internet memes and the non-obvious status of film genres in Slovak cinema. In the fourth section, the authors look at crime literature, including Agatha Christie’s perverse game with the rules of the “good detective story” and Gaja Grzegorzewska’s interesting view of the noir convention. The volume closes with a review article devoted to Agnieszka Trześniewska-Nowak’s monograph on medical thriller.
