‘Łemkowskie rozdroże’ – meeting with the author at the Ethnographic Museum in Wrocław
We have already written about the latest book by prof. Jarosław Syrnyk from the Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology, and you could also read an interview with the professor: Łemkowskie rozdroże – a conversation with prof. Jarosław Syrnyk – University of Wrocław. Today, we invite you to a meeting with the author, which will take place this Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Ethnographic Museum in Wrocław.
The dispute over who the Lemkos are – inhabitants of settlements in the Beskid Sądecki and Beskid Niski regions – began in the second half of the 19th century and continues to this day. Are they just an ethnic group or perhaps a nation – since the French Revolution, as Frederico Chabod wrote: ‘the new deity of the modern world’? And if they are a nation, what rights does this imply for the Lemkos?
These disputes were not interrupted even by the physical annihilation of Lemkos’ Arcadia and the brutal deportations in 1944-1947 to the Soviet Union and the so-called Recovered Territories of post-World War II People’s Poland.
The past of the Lemkos has become a particularly important argument in disputes over their identity and rights. Matters that had hitherto been the subject of legends and fairy tales began to be replaced by history, trying to force unanimity about the past. Lemkos became its victim and the memory of their history became an element of political games.
Today, depending on who is talking about Lemkos and for what purpose, some elements of their history are publicised, while others are passed over in silence.
Dr Marcelina Jakimowicz, an ethnologist and cultural expert whose research interests include the anthropology of memory (in particular the problematisation of memory), ethnicity in Central and Eastern Europe, oral history/biographical studies and historical anthropology, will talk to prof. Syrnyk about how the book Łemkowskie rozdroże presents this problem, focusing on the events of 1944-1947 and describing the subsequent attempts to mythologise them for the use of specific ideologies.
The publication has received the patronage of the weekly magazine ‘Nasze Słowo!’ and the cover is decorated with Dawid Zdobylak’s painting ‘W dniu końca świata’, which won second place at the Tarnów 2024 Art Biennale. Link to the event: https://www.facebook.com/events/1173928894515893
Announcement: ‘Schematy realizacji aktów mowy. Analiza korpusowa wpisów na forach dyskusyjnych’
The premiere of Kamil Wabnic’s book is coming soon – a groundbreaking work in which the author investigates how web users formulate their statements on the internet, what patterns they use and what functions their language performs. It is a scientific study of the language of Polish discussion forums. The author explores the pragmatic aspects of digital communication, combining linguistics, cognitive science and corpus analysis.
‘Schematy realizacji aktów mowy. Analiza korpusowa wpisów na forach dyskusyjnych’ is the result of research on contemporary colloquial Polish in the utterances of users of Polish-language digital discussion forums.
The author has created a scientific description of the patterns and internal structure of speech acts in Internet texts: he has investigated how people express themselves on the Internet and what purpose specific formulations serve. For this purpose, he analysed posts on the most popular discussion forums on the Polish web, such as BabyBoom, Dogomania, Elektroda, Kafeteria, Miau, PCLab, SFD, Vitalia and Wizaz. The description is based on the latest theoretical and methodological developments in the field of speech act research, above all the theory of local grammar. However, the author has carried out research which does not aim to verify existing theories, but to scientifically search for answers on the basis of the material studied.
