In our series #MondayswithWUWr, we keep you up to date with the most important events, book news and issues important to the Publishing House! We also encourage you to follow the wuwr.eu website and the Publishing House’s social media – FbLinkedIn and Instagram and YouTube. We encourage you to follow!

Promotional meetings around WUWr books

If you have been following the activities of the University of Wrocław Press and #Mondays with WUWr, you are well aware that last week saw further meetings around recently published books! These were interesting conversations in rooms full of people interested in the topic! Attendance was good and there was no shortage of questions from the audience, which reinforces our conviction that it is worthwhile to promote academic publishing widely!

The photo shows one of the frames taken during the meeting around the book ‘Dziedzictwo Kulturowe Duchstwa Świdnicko-jaworskiego’ (Cultural Heritage of the Dutchy of Świdnica nad Jawor), which took place in the Museum of Old Merchants in Świdnica. In the photo, apart from the meeting moderator Mariusz Urbanek (deputy director of WUWr), the authors and the editor of this volume – dr Dobiesław Karst, there is the Mayor of Świdnica, Beata Moskal-Słaniewska, as the city of Świdnica subsidised this publishing project.

We will soon be inviting you to further meetings organised by the Publishing House – we already know that in the spring you will be able to meet with prof. Rafał Czachor, author of the book ‘Spór o Wyspy Kurylskie w perspektywie prawa międzynarodowego publicznego i stosunków międzynarodowych. A Critical Study’; with dr Marek Kwaśny, around the book, or rather the figure “Johann Jacob Eybelwieser młodszy – wrocławski malarz doby baroku”, with prof. Jacek Schindler, around the as yet unpublished position ’Kapitalizm jako źródło wartości. Wartości jako źródło katastrofy’ and with prof. Strauchold and other editors of the book ’Od izolacji do resocjalizacji. 100 lat więziennictwa w niepodległej Polsce.’

University of Wrocław Press is the partner of the “Dolnośląskie tematy” conference

As part of this edition, the organisers – Instytut Dolnośląski (Lower Silesian Institute), Książnica Karkonoska (Karkonosze Bookstore), Karkonosze National Park and Pałac Sobieszów (Sobieszów Palace) – want to discuss the Lower Silesian region in terms of tourism and history, nature and cultural heritage, how it is and how it can be.

During this meeting, which will take place on 25-26 April 2025 in Jelenia Góra, there will be presentations by the University of Wrocław Press, books about the region, and authors and editors whose publications have already appeared or will soon appear!

You can register for the conference until the end of February and we warmly encourage you to do so! Details at https://regionalista.org/.

Announcement: ‘Kapitalizm jako źródło wartości. Wartości jako źródło katastrofy’ by prof. Jack Schindler

WUWr will soon publish a publication that will certainly be of interest to researchers in economics, sociology, philosophy and those concerned with ecology and sustainable development. It may also be inspiring for social activists and decision-makers seeking new ways of thinking about the economy and the environment. Prof. Jacek Schindler analyses in this book the economic and cultural mechanisms that perpetuate the growth paradigm, hindering real change for a sustainable future.

In mature capitalism, the construction of product value is based on cultural technologies commonly used by marketing. Cultural meanings and topos shape the face and mission of the market offering. This reciprocally affects the ways in which we understand the basic categories that define our relationship with the world: utility, necessity, scarcity, uniqueness, autotelicity, etc. In this way, capitalism becomes a culture and a source of value.

However, while production technologies must take into account the resistance of matter and the finiteness of earthly resources, culture-based marketing creations no longer do. After all, value-referencing experiences and stories produced for commercial purposes require material vehicles. The result is an uncontrollable exploitation of natural and human resources. In this sense, values become a source of disaster.
