Baroque frescoes under the dome of the Ossolineum building – a guided tour with Marek Kwaśny

We would like to remind you that on April 9, 2025 at 17:00 Emilia Kłoda from the Ossolineum will lead a meeting with Marek Kwaśny from the UWr Institute of Art History on the subject of the Baroque frescoes that decorate the Hall under the dome of the Ossolineum Main Building. The meeting will begin in the Ossolineum Courtyard (or in the Ossolineum Hall in case of inclement weather). Dr Kwaśny will talk about the Knights of the Cross with the Red Star, whose headquarters was today’s Ossolineum, and about the author of the frescoes – Johann Jacob Eybelwieser the younger. We will then proceed to the Hall under the dome to see the master’s frescoes from 1715 up close. Admission is free!

Johann Jacob Eybelwieser junior (1667-1744) – the most important painter from Wrocław of the first half of the 18th century. He became famous as the creator of monumental altar paintings and frescoes with religious themes. He worked for the city’s patriciate and Protestant clergy, but his most important clients remained representatives of the Catholic Church, in particular the powerful orders of the Knights of the Cross with the Red Star, Joannites, Cistercians, Jesuits and Bonifraters.

You can also buy the book “Johann Jacob Eybelwieser młodszy. Wrocławski malarz doby baroku” 30% off even before the meeting! Follow the publisher’s website – there will also be a package with the book “Między Śląskiem a Italią” at an exceptional price.

The book introduces one of the leading painters of 18th century Wrocław. His life and workshop resemble that of Michael Willmann. The author shows that Eybelwieser built his career not only on artistic talent, but also with the instincts of a diplomat who balanced between Protestant bourgeoisand Catholic orders. The book includes 260 illustrations and a catalogue of 230 of Eybelwieser’s works and analyzes his work from technological, iconographic and historical perspectives.

New issue of Cultural Studies Works

We recommend the latest issue of Cultural Studies Works (28, no. 3 / 2024), made available a few days ago on the Scientific Journals on the Web platform. The texts in the issue focus on the analysis of changes in the culture of film and television production in the context of contemporary media and industrial challenges. The starting point is a reflection on the period of so-called “peak TV”, whose dynamic development and gradual twilight become a space for critical diagnosis. The articles collected in the volume are part of the current of production culture studies and critical media industry studies, revealing the complexity of creative, institutional and social processes that co-shape contemporary audiovisual practices.

The authors of individual texts take up, among others, the topic of decolonization of film studies through the turn to production studies (Iwona Morozow), analyze the promotional and narrative strategies of streaming platforms in Spain in the era of the COVID-19 pandemic (María José Higueras Ruiz), and examine the representations of localism and universalism in Polish Netflix productions (Kamil Walczak). In turn, Łukasz Homziuk offers an insightful analysis of the issue of authorship in the serial adaptation of Fargo, emphasizing the relationship between the creators of the film original and showrunner Noah Hawley. The issue closes with a text by Sylwia Szostak and Joanna Szymańska, showing Polish producers as participants in a sector operating in a state of permanent crisis, both economic and psychophysical.

The volume is an important voice in the discussion of the contemporary condition of audiovisual production, highlighting the importance of local and global contexts, as well as drawing attention to issues of ethics, representation and the well-being of creators.
