PREMIERE: Musica i memoria – how was music taught in the Middle Ages?
The WUWr website recently published a publication by Dr. Ryszard Lubieniecki – “Musica i memoria w środkowoeuropejskich traktatach muzycznych pierwszej połowy XV wieku” („Musica and memoria in the Central European Musical Treatises of the First Half of the 15th Century”). The author is a musicologist, instrumentalist and composer currently associated with the Institute of Musicology of the University of Wrocław. He wrote a story which explained how music was taught before the invention of print, which shows how important imagination and memory are.
The end of the Middle Ages is an exceptionally interesting period in European culture. Memory and oral tradition still played a crucial role despite the increased access to writing. The medieval set of methods for improving and shaping memory, called memoria, left a mark on how old arts, such as music, were taught.
Ryszard Lubieniecki researches medieval musical treatises of Central Europe and dives into their connections to the teaching of music and memory techniques. He highlights the role of diagrams and graphics in the relationship between oral tradition and written text. He enriches these reflections with his experience of performance, simultaneously emphasising the social dimension of music.

Author’s meeting at the Grotowski Institute
We invite you to an author’s meeting on May 12th, at 6:00 p.m., with Przemysław Radwański, author of the book “Wartości urzeczywistniane kultury czynnej Jerzego Grotowskiego” (“Values realized in the active culture of Jerzy Grotowski”). The book is dedicated to an outstanding reformer of theatre, Jerzy Grotowski, and focuses on his experiences and actions rather than just declarations. The author uses metaphors and creative language to describe the lesser-known period of paratheater in the 1970s. It is a suggestive story about searching for a deeper meaning in art and culture.
The event will take place in the Ludwik Flaszen Reading Room of the Grotowski Institute. The entry is free, but a reservation for a free ticket is required (www.bilety.grotowski-institute.pl)
