MAIN SILESIANA 2025 PUBLISHING AWARD for the University of Wrocław Press!
This year’s celebrations of the 14th Regional Book Fair SILESIANA, organised by the Tadeusz Mikulski Lower Silesian Public Library in Wrocław, concluded with great success for the University of Wrocław Press, which received the main award!
The publication by Patrick Starczewski, Od lokomotyw do czołgów. Przed Pafawagiem. Sto lat zakładów Linke-Hoffman 1839-1939, was recognised for its valuable insight and rich documentation in reconstructing the history of the Linke-Hoffman factory between 1839 and 1939. The book presents this history within a broad context of the civilisational and cultural changes in Wrocław and Silesia. This publishing project was created in cooperation with the Historical Museum in Lubin and Gajt Publishing.
The book recounts the history of one of the largest factories in Europe — a Wrocław-based industrial conglomerate formed by the merger of two rival companies, which became the industrial heart of the city. The author blends historical and business perspectives, tracing the evolution from carriage production to war machinery and industrial might. Enriched with over 200 unique illustrations, photographs, and plans, the publication transports readers into the world of pre-war Wrocław and its industrial legacy.
We warmly encourage you to explore this publication, available on the website.
The award — a painting by Wrocław-based artist Paulina Mager, depicting one of the city’s bridges — was received by Marcin Skrabka, Director of the University of Wrocław Press.
Additionally, for four days visitors could explore the publisher’s stand, which attracted numerous enthusiasts of local history and lovers of books.
Happening Today! Meeting at the Grotowski Institute
On 12 May 2025 at 6:00 p.m., a meeting will be held around the book Wartości urzeczywistniane kultury czynnej Jerzego Grotowskiego, authored by Przemysław Radwański — both a scholar and participant in Grotowski’s work. The event will take place in the Ludwik Flaszen Reading Room at the Grotowski Institute on the Wrocław Market Square.
The publication focuses on the concrete actions of Jerzy Grotowski, especially his lesser-known paratheatrical period of the 1970s, portraying him as an artist in search of meaning beyond traditional theatre. It is a suggestive and metaphorical reflection on art as a path to spiritual and cultural transformation.
The meeting will address not only the book but also the values and ideas that extend beyond theatre. It will be a conversation about Grotowski as the creator of a spiritual project of transformation — not merely a theatre director. We invite everyone interested: theatre practitioners, researchers, students of theatre and arts, theatre lovers, and all those drawn to the idea of active culture and creative work. Free entry!
Matthias Zschokke’s novel published in Poland for the first time!
Tomorrow marks the Polish premiere of the novel Maurice z Kurą, winner of the prestigious Prix Femina Étranger and considered one of the most original works of contemporary German-language literature. A meeting with the author, Matthias Zschokke, will take place on 13 May at 6:00 p.m. at the Goethe Institute in Warsaw. The novel is a journey full of irony, humour, and melancholy through the nooks and crannies of Berlin, where everyday life blends with fantasy. This is a unique opportunity to meet an author whose works have already captivated readers in France, Germany, and Italy — and who is now making his Polish debut.
Further meetings will be held in Wrocław and Kraków — we warmly invite you to join!
New Journal Issues Now Available!
New issues are now available on the Academic Journals Online website:
- Praca Kulturoznawcze Tom 28 Nr 4 (2024): Problemy kultury — problemy z kulturą. This issue explores the role of cultural theory as a tool for shaping our thinking and actions — through metaphors and the category of values. The authors reflect on theory as an active means of understanding culture, examining its relationship with the history of ideas, literature, and philosophical debate. Special emphasis is placed on the dialogue between theory and practice, as seen in the analysis of Joanna Ślósarska’s work and the polemic around the book The Torments of Fate.
- Miscellanea Posttotalitariana Wratislaviensia Tom 11 (2023): Transformacja systemowa a społeczny wymiar kultury w krajach postkomunistycznej Europy. This issue focuses on the cultural consequences of political transformation in Central and Eastern Europe after 1989, with particular emphasis on reckoning with the past, redefining freedom, and building a new identity. Scholars and creators from Poland and the former Yugoslavia analyse how theatre, film, and literature reflect and shape social change in post-communist societies.
- Wrocławskie Studia Politologiczne Tom 34 (2024). This volume addresses contemporary challenges to democracy, international politics, and social and institutional transformations across different countries. Articles cover topics such as populism, energy security, foreign policy, media, and human rights in both local and global contexts.
