Launch of Historia obecności by Monika Jaremków!

For centuries, Jews and Poles lived in close proximity, while maintaining a marked distinctiveness. In her book Historia obecności. Przekłady literatury żydowskiej w polskim repertuarze wydawniczym w XX wieku, Dr Monika Jaremków explores the cultural distance between the two communities, as well as the attempts made throughout the 20th century to bridge that gap. One striking illustration of the limited interpenetration of their literatures is the example of Czesław Miłosz. Although raised in cosmopolitan Vilnius, Miłosz first encountered Jewish culture in New York – and through the English language.

Monika Jaremków shows how Jewish literature, translated from Hebrew and Yiddish, entered the Polish publishing market and how it was received by Polish readers. She analysed 318 translations from both before and after the Second World War, collected in Poland and abroad. These publications include not only fiction and poetry but also historical and journalistic texts.

Karl Dedecius, the eminent translator and promoter of Polish literature in Germany, described translation as a form of ambassadorship and a tool of intercultural dialogue. Historia obecności by Monika Jaremków is the finest proof of the truth of those words.

Highly recommended, the book is now available: Historia obecności. Przekłady literatury żydowskiej w polskim repertuarze wydawniczym w XX wieku. Oprawa twarda | Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Wrocławskiego

Duże miasta jako obszary źródłowe i docelowe migracji międzygminnych w Polsce by Mateusz Długosz – now at the printers!

Migration is a subject that sparks much discussion in the public sphere. This discourse usually focuses on international migration, whereas internal migration is a phenomenon of considerably larger scale. While international migration affected 272 million people worldwide in 2019, in India alone internal migration involved approximately 326 million individuals. Dr Mateusz Długosz, a graduate of the Department of Socio-Economic Geography, analyses demographic and social transformations, and investigates the mechanisms shaping migration movements from 2002 to 2018, using major urban centres such as Warsaw, Kraków, and Wrocław as examples.

The author raises thought-provoking questions: What is the scope of influence of large cities on their surroundings? What factors determine its scale? Has the era of counterurbanisation begun? The answers are often surprising, but above all, they provide a valuable resource for researchers, geopoliticians, and those interested in migration and urbanisation processes. This book introduces innovative research methods and terms that broaden existing perspectives on the subject. An invaluable aspect of this publication is the inclusion of charts and maps that help clarify and illustrate the issues discussed. The book is available for pre-order here:
