The recently announced book by dr Mateusz Długosz has just arrived at the bookshop of the Wrocław University Press.
The topic of population migration is widely discussed around the world — but have you ever considered what migration looks like within Poland itself? In his book, dr Mateusz Długosz examines the causes and consequences of internal migration in the country on the Vistula. Settlement patterns have changed dramatically in a relatively short time. Our grandparents remember multigenerational households where no one considered moving. Today, people may change their place of residence several times over the course of their lives.
The author analyses demographic and social changes between 2002 and 2018, focusing on how they influence migration decisions. Does the extent to which large cities impact their surrounding areas depend on distance? What factors affect the scale of these movements? This monograph offers answers to these questions, going beyond the traditional focus on phenomena such as suburbanisation — the movement of people to suburban areas — and shedding new light on counterurbanisation, in which people seek peace and charm in less populated, more scenic locations.
It is a compelling read that makes us realise just how dynamic a time and place we are currently living in. The changes occurring in our immediate surroundings are significant — and affect every citizen of Poland.
