More grants for our researches
Dr Kamil Blaszczyński from the Faculty of Social Sciences received a research grant entitled ‘Test przekonań religijno-nacjonalnych – narzędzie badawcze’. Five of our young researchers were included in the next NCN Miniatura grant.
The topic of dr Kamil Blaszczyński’s research is the religious and national identity of individuals, particularly the merging of these two important sources in the construction of judgements about political, social and cultural life.
The idea for the research was born in the course of my research quest, mainly focused on understanding what motivates people most to vote for a party or candidate in parliamentary, presidential or local elections, and I wondered what elements of identity are related to other phenomena important for the development of democracy, such as social capital – explains our researcher.

On the basis of the available literature, religious and nationalist themes, in the context of Poland, were very often taken up by both domestic and foreign authors. – However, it has not been given as much analytical space as, for example, our colleagues from the United States – says dr Błaszczyński. – Not only do they have models and standardised tools at their disposal to diagnose the phenomenon of religious nationalism, but they have also discovered a number of significant links between this phenomenon and citizens’ motivation to vote, the rise in popularity of elected politicians and susceptibility to political polarisation.
Because of Poland’s history, our researcher found it worthwhile to develop similar themes in our country and in the European Union – I wanted our social science researchers not only to have an analogous, open-access tool to pursue specific research objectives, but I also wanted this tool to have the potential to be adaptive to conduct longitudinal and comparative research in many countries where religious and nationalist themes are still alive and important – he explains.
He intends to use the grant he has just received for, among other things, survey research – I hope that this grant will be the start of larger projects that will cover most of the countries of the European Union and of many scientific publications that will make a significant contribution to the ongoing debate – adds our researcher.
