Mother tongue in many scenes
On the occasion of International Mother Language Day, which is celebrated on 21 February, our researchers talked about the various complicated aspects of the Polish language in different places.

Dr hab. Tomasz Piekot from the Department of Modern Polish Language at the Institute of Polish Studies (Faculty of Letters) convinced the school community at the Kasprowicz Secondary School No. I in Świdnica that „Kakao można odmieniać. Czasem jednak nie wypada” (“Kakao can be conjugated. Sometimes, however, it is not appropriate”).
The aim of the lecture was to make students aware of how norms of linguistic correctness are created and in which situations they are modified.
It turns out that language users very often think that norms are created by linguists – says dr hab. Piekot, head of the Laboratory of Simple Polish. – This is a dangerous myth that should be fought against.
Pupils learned that they create the most important norm (the so-called applied norm), while linguists analyse linguistic behaviour and codify such a norm (noted in dictionaries).
In my lecture I demonstrated the procedure for identifying the norm – based on language advice centres, dictionaries and corpora. I encouraged students and teachers to contact the university’s telephone counselling service, demonstrated the operation of the latest Korpus Współczesnego Języka Polskiego (Corpus of Modern Polish Language), and showed unacceptable examples of linguistic purism in the form of the correction mania.
In Fakty o poranku (Facts in the morning) on the Wrocław Regional Television with Maciej Biskup, we were able to listen to our doctoral student Jan Krzywdziński, and on Echo24 TV dr Grzegorz Zarzeczny talked to Monika Sudor.
Dr hab. Marcin Poprawa, on the other hand, gave a lecture on „Prosty język – dialog autora z czytelnikiem” (“Simple language – a dialogue between the author and the reader”) during the 6th Wrocław Mother Language Day celebrations under the title ,,Słowo do słowa, a będzie rozmowa” (“Word to word, and there will be talk”), while prof. Monika Zaśko-Zielińska could be heard on the academic Radio Luz.
