National Education Day
The University of Wrocław is the only public university in the region that educates future teachers of pre-school education and early school education, as well as teachers for grades 4 of primary school to the final year of secondary school. The essential of getting teacher’s licence is graduating from a chosen field of study (e.g. philological, mathematical, natural studies, etc.) and receiving the occupational powers in accordance with current standards for teachers’ education. For the National Education Day we wish good health, a lot of persistence, joy and satisfaction to all the teachers and teacher candidates!
The first step for a future teacher is passing the exam from the course “Psychology for teachers”. – By completing this course, students open up their path to taking teachers’ licence – says doc. Leszek Ryk, the director of the Teachers Education Centre of the University of Wrocław. – The number of students who begin this process has been at a similar level for years. Of course, there are fluctuations in the disciplines in which our students educate – adds the director.
From years at a constant or even increasing level has been the number of people who study Polish philology, English philology, geography or history – An average of around 220 people start classes at the Teacher Education Centre every year – says doc. Leszek Ryk.
And with around 220 students starting every year, there are about 1,100 students from various fields of study who gain their qualifications at the same time. While the number of English philology students is increasing, the number of, for example, science graduates who would like to teach in schools is decreasing. This is the result of either less interest in those disciplines in general, or of choosing a different career path. Physics, chemistry or biology students see themselves rather in university’s laboratories than in schools.
But we, as UWr, are opening up for the new. From this year, we will be educating future teachers of ethics, Ukrainian and Russian.
The question arises how many UWr’s graduates who took the teacher’s licence during their studies actually decided to follow this profession. Thanks to The Academic Career Office of the University of Wrocław’s research of the graduates, we know that among those graduating from 2015 to 2018, about 11 percent of the respondents who declare working in a company or institution (and who were asked about their job title) are teachers. Depending on the graduating class, the job title of the “teacher” is either the most frequently indicated, or is in the second place after the “specialist”.
As far as pre-school and early school pedagogy is concerned, from the 2019/2020 academic year (when the 5-year master’s degree formula was introduced) we have no problems with the admissions for this field of study. Every year the accepted limit of full-time and part-time enrolments is filled. In this year’s admissions for full-time studies of pre-school and early school pedagogy, the limit was filled in the first intake (as in previous years).
Good luck Everyone!
