Nicolaus Copernicus Scientific Awards presented

On Wednesday, 10 December, during a session of the Kraków City Council, representatives of the scientific community received the Nicolaus Copernicus Scientific Awards. Among the honoured scientists were three from the University of Wrocław!

The awards are funded once every five years by the Municipality of Krakow and awarded by the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences. They are awarded in nine categories related to the sciences studied by Nicolaus Copernicus. The awards are presented to authors associated with Polish science who, in the five years preceding the year of the award, have published works of particularly high scientific value in the fields of astronomy, economics, classical philology, natural philosophy, cosmology and astrophysics, mathematics, medicine, earth sciences and law.

The award in the field of economics was presented to Prof. Mateusz Machaj from the Department of General Economic Theory at the Faculty of Law, Administration and Economics of the University of Wrocław for his work Monetary Policy and Inflation. Quantity Theory of Money.

The award in the field of classical philology was presented to Dr Karol Zieliński, Professor at the University of Wrocław, from the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research on the Relationship between Oral and Written Culture at the Faculty of Modern Languages at the University of Wrocław, for his monograph The Iliad and the Oral Epic Tradition.

The award in the field of mathematics was presented to Prof. Mariusz Mirek from the Department of Functional Analysis, Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science, University of Wrocław, for his outstanding contribution to the development of contemporary mathematics, with particular emphasis on his groundbreaking results concerning the Furstenberg-Bergelson-Leibman hypothesis on the point convergence of unconventional ergodic means.
