Not only Slavic Song Contest!
The next edition of the (not only) Slavic Song Contest organised by our university’s Institute of Slavic Studies will take place on Monday, 13 May, at 4 p.m. in the Oratorium Marianum.
From this year, the annual Slavic Song Competition not only changed its formula, but also its name – from this edition it is the Non-Slavic Song Contest. Students and doctoral students will present themselves on the stage of the Oratorium Marianum, singing songs in all possible languages, promoting above all their institutes and their philologies.
We could see how beautifully such cooperation with students and lecturers from the Faculty of Letters and other, non-faculty institutes works out when we took part in a charity concert organised by the Faculty of Letters, We Play for Sebastian, in March.
In this year’s competition we will hear amateurs and professionals singing very well-known songs in various languages, including Hallelujah from the repertoire of Leonard Cohen in Polish, On écrit sur les murs from the repertoire of Demis Roussos and the French group Kids United, a song from the repertoire of Muslim Magomayev, so popular even in Poland, entitled Свадьба. Свадьба, a moving, beautiful song from the repertoire of Namika entitled Lieblingsmensch in German, Sarajevo from the repertoire of Jaromir Nohavica in Czech and other songs in English, Ukrainian, Serbian, Polish and Spanish.
During the jury’s deliberations, outside of the competition, the stage will be taken over primarily by the Slavists. After all, they were the initiators of this competition, they set the tone for twenty years and made the Slavic Song Contest a showpiece not only of the Institute of Slavic Studies, the Faculty of Letters and the University of Wrocław, but also of Wrocław as a whole.
We will hear our wonderful graduates singing in Czech, Slovak, Serbian, Russian, Ukrainian and Polish.
The competition is a great advertisement for the University and the city, and the unique atmosphere created by the organisers attracts talented young people not only from Polish universities.
The concert was held under the patronage of the Rector of the University of Wrocław, professor Robert Olkiewicz, the Honorary Consul of the Czech Republic in Wrocław, Arkadiusz Ignasiak, and the Dean of the Faculty of Letters, Arkadiusz Lewicki.
The organisers of the Competition are: Scientific Student Association of Russian studies WroSlawians from the Institute of Slavic Studies, the Centre for Culture and the Arts in Wrocław, the UWr International Office, the UWr Student and Doctoral Activity Support Office
