Official inauguration of the Jean Monnet Chair
The official inauguration of the Jean Monnet Chair took place on 27 June. On this occasion, a seminar was held on ‘Representative Democracy in Times of Crisis: Challenges and Prospects”. The aim of the seminar was to discuss the impact of pandemics and other crises on the work of national parliaments and the European Parliament. Issues raised included the relationship between the legislative and executive powers in times of crisis, inter-parliamentary cooperation, the role of digitalisation in the work of parliaments, as well as proposals for reform of representative institutions drawn up as part of the Conference on the Future of Europe. The debate was attended by parliamentarians and academics studying the impact of crises on the work and competences of parliaments and political parties.
The Jean Monnet Chair was established by dr hab. Aleksandra Maatsch, prof. UWr, who received a grant from the European Union for this purpose. The Jean Monnet Chair is a prestigious EU grant for university professors to establish a chair in European Studies. In the last competition (2021), the European Commission established only one Jean Monnet Chair in Poland. The Chair will be administratively embedded in the Willy Brandt Centre for German and European Studies at UWr. More about the Chair on our website.
