On children’s literature at the University of Wrocław
Two important events related to the topic of children’s literature are ahead of us.
On 17-18 March 2025, a meeting of the Erasmus Mundus International Master: Children’s Literature, Media & Cultural Entrepreneurship (CLMCE) programme consortium, comprising Glasgow University (lead institution), Tilburg University and Aarhus University, will take place at the University of Wrocław. Also present will be a representative from the University of Nantes, which, like the University of Wrocław, has the status of a key associate partner in this programme. The organisation of the meeting is the responsibility of dr hab. Justyna Deszcz-Tryhubczak, prof. UWr and dr hab. Barbara Kalla, prof. UWr.
The team implementing the programme at our university consists of dr hab. Justyna Deszcz-Tryhubczak, prof. UWr, dr Dawid Junke, dr Małgorzata Kozubek, mgr Martyna Stec and dr hab. Mateusz Świetlicki, prof. UWr. Programme implementation period: 2023-2029 Total grant amount obtained by the consortium team: EUR 5,742,000.00. A detailed programme is available on the website. The organisers also encourage applications for scholarships and the implementation of master’s degree programmes on literature and culture for young audiences.
The fourth international symposium and workshop for early career scholars will take place on 19-20 March 2025: Children’s Literature for Understanding the Past, Shaping the Present, and Determining the Future. It is organised by the Children’s and Young People’s Literature Research Centre at the UWr Faculty of Languages, Literatures and Cultures and the Faculty of Social Communication and Media Studies, in collaboration with the University of Aveiro (Portugal) and the Erasmus Mundus International Master: Children’s Literature, Media & Cultural Entrepreneurship consortium. The event is co-sponsored by the University of Wroclaw within the framework of the ‘Initiative of Excellence – Research University’ IDUB grant ‘Young Researcher 2023-2025’. The symposium is a continuation of the meetings of budding researchers previously organised at the University of Aveiro. The organisation is the responsibility of dr Elżbieta Jamróz-Stolarska – project manager, dr hab. Justyna Deszcz-Tryhubczak, prof. UWr and dr hab. Barbara Kalla, prof. UWr.
The theme of this year’s meeting concerns the cultural, social, historical and political dimensions of literature for children and young people as an expression of reflection on the past, present and future. Topics to be discussed will include memory and nostalgia, national heritage, critiques of the present in texts for young audiences, pedagogical contexts for historical content in children’s books, changes in conceptualisations of childhood or the problematic history of children’s literature.
The symposium is designed as an international forum for budding researchers to present their research and receive feedback. The workshop will be led by renowned researchers who will also give lectures that are open to a wider audience: prof. Evelyn Arizpe (University of Glasgow), prof. Ana Margarida Ramos (University of Aveiro) and prof. Macarena García-González (Pompeu Fabry University). The workshop will provide an opportunity to discuss different aspects of the research work and the practical application of the selected methodologies.
