On the margins of contemporary society
Researchers will receive almost PLN 520 million to realise their projects from NCN. In the OPUS 24 and SONATA 18 competitions, settled on 18 May, 3015 applications were submitted, of which 363 were qualified for funding.
Researchers and scientists from the University of Wrocław won sixteen grants in both competitions, with a total value of PLN 24,675,537.
Among the winners of the SONATA competition is dr Eva Duda, who won funding from the National Science Centre for a project entitled „Intersekcjonalność migracji, niepełnosprawności oraz gender we współczesnej Polsce” (‘Intersectionality of migration, disability and gender in contemporary Poland’).
The issue this project concentrates on is related to the social construction of migrant status, disability status and gender and the links between them.
What are the links between a migrant and a person with a disability and gender?
According to the researcher, these are some of the most marginalised groups in society.
The project therefore aims to bring together three concepts from the field of sociology to identify the links between disability, migration and gender, and to explore the experiences of migrants with disabilities as those who are among the most marginalised groups in contemporary societies.
– Through this project, I intend to gather new knowledge and deepen the understanding of migrants with disabilities and gender and contribute to greater inclusivity in the Social Sciences – says Eva Duda. Participants in the study will include people with migration histories and disabilities, both labour and forced migrants, as well as key informants from organisations that work with migrants and people with disabilities.

Dr Eva Duda – assistant professor at the Incubator for Research Excellence – Centre for Interdisciplinary Research into Health and Illness (Faculty of Letters, UWr). Sociologist and political scientist with a PhD in social policy. Her previous work has focused, among other things, on migration within the European Union, primarily between Poland and the UK, and gender. She is particularly interested in intersectionality and looking at the other person holistically, as a person who at any given time manifests multiple characteristics (e.g. gender, citizenship, non/disability), which is reflected in their membership (or not) in given social groups.
