Prof. dr. Peter Vandenabeele professor in Archaeometry at Ghent University’s Department of Archaeology and an affiliated member of its Department of Chemistry, where he leads the Raman Spectroscopy Research Group. He has published over 200 peer-reviewed papers, holds an H-index of 45, and has amassed more than 6,500 citations (excluding self-citations).
His interdisciplinary research team bridges the humanities and natural sciences and is renowned globally. Among its achievements, the group developed the first mobile Raman instrument designed specifically for archaeometry. It has applied this technology across a wide array of studies, establishing itself among the top laboratories in this field.
The presentation will explain to the audience how scientific research can contribute to a better understanding of the materiality of cultural heritage. It will provide an insight in how this research is performed and on the challenges that are encountered. The speaker will give special attention on the application of Raman spectroscopy in cultural heritage research. The approach will be extensively illustrated with recent examples of the author’s scientific research in the field.
