Our doctoral student receives the Polish Physical Society Award
Bartosz Rusin, our doctoral student, has been awarded the Arkadiusz Piekara Prize of the Polish Physical Society for his master’s thesis devoted to materials that may revolutionise superconducting technology.
In his search for the superconductors of the future, Bartosz investigated high-entropy alloys – special mixtures of multiple elements which, thanks to their complex structure, can combine remarkable mechanical properties with superconductivity. His aim was to identify materials that retain their superconducting properties under challenging conditions while also being durable and inexpensive to produce.
In the course of his research, he synthesised a new alloy, Nb₀․₃₄Ti₀․₃₃Zr₀․₁₄Ta₀․₁₁Hf₀․₀₈, which exhibited some of the best critical parameters among the known HEA superconductors. Such materials could find applications in medicine (MRI), particle accelerators, and nuclear energy.
Bartosz Rusin is a first-year doctoral student at the Doctoral School of Physics and Astronomy.
As a physics student, he twice received the Young Researcher grant with the highest competition score, was a recipient of the Rector’s Scholarship for outstanding academic achievements, a finalist of the national Student Nobel 2024 competition in the Physics and Astronomy category, and a laureate of the Pearls of Science programme funded by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education.
The award ceremony of the Polish Physical Society will take place during the 49th Congress of Polish Physicists in Katowice, on 6 September 2025, at the Silesian Philharmonic.
The supervisors of the awarded master’s thesis were dr hab. Rafał Idczak, prof. UWr, and dr inż. Michał Babij from the Institute of Low Temperature and Structure Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
Congratulations!
