Prof. Andrzej Grodzicki honorary citizen of Złotoryja
Prof. dr hab. Andrzej Grodzicki, geologist, retired academic teacher at the Institute of Geological Sciences of the University of Wrocław, was awarded the title of honorary citizen of Złotoryja. The decision to honour the professor was announced at a session of the Złotoryja City Council on 30 March 2023.
In his substantiation of the application, the Mayor of Złotoryja, Robert Pawłowski, noted the exceptional role played by Professor A. Grodzicki in promoting the Złotoryja area – a region of occurrence and exploitation of gold, agates and other mineral and rock resources. In this area, professor Grodzicki carried out scientific research for more than half a century, crowned by successive degrees.
In recognition of his services to Złotoryja, in 2018 the scientist’s name was included on a brass plaque embedded in the pavement of the Złotoryja Market Square.
During the ceremonial session, the mayor of Złotoryja emphasised that the professor has been associated with our town for 70 years: – In 1953, he first started looking for gold particles in the sand on the Kaczawa River. He is an extraordinary man. His stories about the history of gold prospecting around Złotoryja testify to his incredible erudition. I would like to thank the professor for what he has done and continues to do to promote our town. This honorary citizenship is just a modest thank you for 70 years of work for our city.
The laureate’s state of health only allowed him to participate in the ceremonial awarding of his honourary citizenship remotely. In his usual colourful speech, professor A. Grodzicki thanked the councillors of Złotoryja for recognising his scientific and popularising activities in the area of the North Sudetic depression. He promised to come to Złotoryja for the next gold panning championships, an event he had inspired. The act of awarding an honorary citizen was collected on behalf of the professor by a member of his family, and the ceremony was attended by a delegation from the Institute of Geological Sciences of the University of Wrocław.
