Prof. Krzysztof Ruchniewicz appointed director of Pilecki Institute

Polish Minister of Culture and National Heritage Hanna Wróblewska appointed professor Krzysztof Ruchniewicz as director of Witold Pilecki’s Institute of Solidarity and Courage.  His five-year term in office starts on 5 November 2024. Dr Wojciech Kozłowski, who had been the acting director of the Institute, will assume the position of vice-director.

The new director’s priority will be to audit the Pilecki Institute’s activities and to contribute to international scientific dialogue pertaining to the history of the 20th century. The Institute will keep deepening and popularizing knowledge about totalitarianism and authoritarianism in the 20th century.

Professor Krzysztof Ruchniewicz

Professor Ruchniewicz is a historian who specializes in the 20th century. He is professionally associated with University of Wrocław. His main focus is on the histories of Europe, Germany, and Polish-German relations in the 20th century. His interests include, among others: resistance and opposition during World War II and in the first decade after the war, international textbook studies, public history, and visual history. He is a member of multiple scientific boards in Poland and abroad.

He headed the Willy Brandt Center for German and European Studies, a scientific and didactic organization co-managed by the University of Wrocław and DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst), for 20 years. Since mid-August 2024, he has been acting as representative of the Polish Minister of Foreign Affairs in matters concerning the Polish-German social cooperation and cross-border cooperation.
