Prof. Thomas Weigend at the UWr

From 15 to 20 April, the Digital Justice Center had the pleasure of hosting a Professor from the University of Cologne, Thomasa Weigenda. This visit became possible through funding received from a competition awarding short visits for professors, financed by IDUB (Initiative of Excellence – Research University)

During his visit, professor Weigend attended various meetings and events. He met with dr Alicja Limburska and dr Konrad Lipiński from the Department of Substantive Criminal Law of the FLAE to discuss a jointly conducted project in the field of comparative criminal law. On Wednesday, a seminar during which young researchers from the Digital Justice Center had an opportunity to present their research projects and discuss them with Professor Weigend.

At the end of his stay, he gave an open lecture, „Criminal Liability of and for Automated Weapons Systems,” which was moderated by dr Kaja Kowalczewska, an Assistant Professor at the Digital Justice Center.

In 1977, Professor Weigend finished his doctorate at the University of Freiburg, and then in 1973 got his Master’s degree in comparative law at the University of Chicago. In the years 1986-2016 he worked at the University of Cologne, where he specialized in teaching German criminal law, comparative criminal law and criminal procedure. Moreover, he had visited many prestigious institutions, such as The University of Tokyo, New York University and Peking University. His research output consists of over 300 publications.
