
Professor Jerzy Hrynkiewicz-Sudnik passed away
It is with great regret that we announce that on 13.10.2024 our teacher and master, Professor Jerzy Hrynkiewicz-Sudnik passed away. He was a botanist, dendrologist, one of the leading researchers of the Wrocław dendroflora, expert in the art of green areas and landscape formation, an ornithologist by passion, a graduate of the Horticultural State School in Poznań (1951) and biological studies at the University of Wrocław (1955). He graduated from his doctoral studies at the Faculty of Biology and Earth Sciences of the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań (1960). His further scientific development was associated with the University of Wrocław: postdoctoral degree in 1971, professor degree in 1988.
Professor Jerzy Hrynkiewicz-Sudnik participated in the reconstruction of the Botanical Garden after the war damage. He was a co-author of the development of a new part of the garden – the department of ground ornamental plants. In cooperation with Jadwiga Teleżyńska he began establishing the collection of rhododendrons and azaleas, as well as coniferous trees and bushes. He provided scientific care for the Arboretum in Wojsławice and historical greenery in Lower Silesia, including Szczytnicki Park in Wrocław and parks in Lądek Zdrój, Szczawna Zdrój and Polanica. He was a member of numerous learned societies: The Polish Economic Society (PTE) and The Polish Dendrology Society (PTD). From 1959 to 1976 we was a head of the dendrology department in the Botanical Garden of the University of Wrocław. In 1976 he was employed in the Natural History Museum of the University of Wrocław where, apart from scientific work, he was promoting and educating dendrology enthusiasts.
The funeral ceremony will take place on 26 October 2023 in Kutno. Mass will be held at 12.00 p.m. in the Church of St Stanislaus the Bishop and Martyr, ul. Łąkoszyńska 11, Kutno. The Mass will be followed by the escort of the decedent to the Łąkoszyn cemetery.
