Proximity matters: Field research by UWr students in the Land of Extinct Volcanoes Geopark
On 20-21 May, students from the University of Wrocław carried out field research as part of an international project funded by the ARQUS Innovation Fund. The project, titled Proximity matters: transdisciplinary joint teaching activities to foster collaborative networks between local food producers and tourism/leisure entrepreneurs, under sustainable development and climate change prismas, is being jointly implemented by five universities belonging to the ARQUS European University Alliance. The project focuses on the readiness and adaptability of food-producing entities in the face of climate change.
The aim of the project is to analyse and enhance efforts to strengthen connections and economic proximity between local food producers and businesses operating in the tourism sector. Such cooperation is expected to reduce carbon footprints, foster the development of social capital, and shorten supply chains.
During their visit to the Land of Extinct Volcanoes Geopark, students from the Institute of Geography and Regional Development – representing various years and programmes such as Geography, Spatial Management, and Tourism – conducted a series of interviews with local food producers and their clients (including agritourism operators and restaurants). The students were accompanied in the field by dr hab. prof. UWr Sylwia Dołzbłasz and dr hab. prof. UWr Krzysztof Janc.
The hosts who generously shared their experiences and insights included: the Agroturystyka i Restauracja Młyn Wielisław, Villa Greta, Gościniec Pod Gruszą (which features a microbrewery and oil press), and the Pasieka na Malinowym Wzgórzu apiary. The students also had the opportunity to learn about the specifics of the study area, as well as the history and objectives of the Geopark. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to everyone for their time and support with the research.
