Religion and Art in Gdańsk – seminar

The Department of Renaissance and Reformation Art History at the Institute of Art History of the University of Wrocław, is organising, from 22 to 27 September 2025 in Gdańsk, the Polish-German Seminar Wrocław–Halle–Siegen “Religion and Art in Multi-Ethnic and Multi-Confessional Gdańsk in the Early Modern Period”. The participants in this event, prepared in cooperation with Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg and the University of Siegen, will include scholars, doctoral candidates and students of art history, Protestant and Catholic theology and church history from the institutions named above.

The aim of this initiative, which fosters interdisciplinary and international exchange, is to explore new possibilities for interpreting the cultural and artistic phenomena of Gdańsk and its wider domain. The seminar sessions will focus on the history and monuments of Gdańsk’s architecture, painting and sculpture, which participants will study during lectures at the National Museum as well as on heritage excursions. Also envisaged are interdisciplinary group projects in St Mary’s Church and joint research making use of primary source materials. The outcomes of the work will be presented at the close of the seminar.

The academic directors of the Polish-German Seminar Wrocław–Halle–Siegen are  prof. dr hab. Udo Sträter of Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg; prof. dr hab. Veronika Albrecht-Birkner, Head of the Department of Church History and Theology at the University of Siegen; prof. dr hab. Andreas Hoffmann of the Department of Catholic Theology at the University of Siegen; and dr Marcin Wisłocki, Acting Head of the Department of Renaissance and Reformation Art History at the University of Wrocław.

The project is funded by the universities involved and by the Foundation for Polish-German Cooperation.

The honorary patronage of the undertaking is held by the Mayor of Gdańsk, Aleksandra Dulkiewicz, and by the Bishop of the Pomeranian–Greater Poland Diocese of the Evangelical-Augsburg Church in the Republic of Poland, the Revd Prof. Marcin Hintz.
