Researchers from the University of Wrocław created the AltHydro system

Dr Michał Halicki and prof. Tomasz Niedzielski from the Department of Geoinformatics and Cartography at the Institute of Geography and Regional Development at the University of Wrocław developed the AltHydro system, which presents innovative water level predictions for the Oder River!

The AltHydro system combines data from the Sentinel-3A satellite with traditional water gauge measurements to provide water level forecasts for the next 72 hours. The system analyses the data from the water gauge stations, cleans and supplements it, and then uses satellite observations to forecast the water level at the so-called virtual stations, i.e. places on the river observed only by satellite. This allows access to current forecasts even in places without direct measuring stations. The system is operational and provides forecasts every hour at eight virtual stations on the Middle Oder.

The project was carried out as part of the Sonata BIS programme of the National Science Centre (2020/38/E/ST10/00295).
