Researchers of Earth’s history

he expedition to Svalbard (Norway), part of an international expedition financed by the Svalbard Strategic Grant – TONES of the Norwegian Research Council and supported by a grant from the National Science Centre ‘Opus’ – NEOMAGRATE (IGF-PAN), has come to an end.

One of the participants of the expedition was our scientist, dr inż. Grzegorz Ziemniak (WNoZIKS-ING), who, together with eight scientists from centres in Poland, Norway, Sweden, Canada and the United Kingdom, took part in collecting samples for geochronological, petrological and palaeomagnetic purposes.

The participants of the expedition, which lasted over three weeks, were stationed on the yacht S/Y Ocean B and visited several dozen locations in western and northern Svalbard, crossing the 80°N parallel several times. The results of the measurements and analysis of the samples will allow for the verification of the continuation of tectonic structures documented in the Barents Sea and a more accurate determination of Svalbard’s position on the globe throughout geological history.

You can read more about the research of dr inż. Grzegorz Ziemniak on our website.
