Secondary School No. III and the University of Wrocław join forces and launch cooperation

Secondary School No. III (Liceum Ogólnokształcące nr III) and the University of Wrocław are beginning a collaboration that opens up new opportunities for pupils’ academic and personal development. This initiative is yet another example of combining the academic potential of the university with the energy and ambition of Wrocław’s youth. A press conference announcing the partnership will take place on 10 October at 12:00 p.m. in the Senate Hall of the University of Wrocław.

The signing of the letter of intent between the University of Wrocław and Secondary School No. III marks a continuation of cooperation first established in the 1960s. At that time, mathematics-focused classes were created, taught by, among others, Prof. Roman Duda and Prof. Stanisław Hartman. On behalf of the university, the agreement will be signed by Rector Robert Olkiewicz; representing the City of Wrocław, it will be signed by Deputy Mayor Ryszard Kessler. The event will also be attended by prof. Łukasz Machaj, Vice-Rector for Teaching at the University of Wrocław; prof. Dariusz Buraczewski, Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science; Marcin Miedziński, Deputy Director of the Department of Education; Monika Sochacka, Deputy Director of the Office for Cooperation with Higher Education Institutions; and Tomasz Cygal, Headteacher of Secondary School No. III.

The agreement was revived in 2014 by the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Wrocław. In recent years, pupils from the school’s university mathematics classes have achieved remarkable success – winning medals at the International Mathematical Olympiad and the International Olympiad in Informatics. In August this year, a pupil from Secondary School No. III won the International Artificial Intelligence Olympiad.

Under the renewed agreement, pupils of Secondary School No. III will be offered academic mentorship from university staff. The collaboration covers science subjects – mathematics, physics, computer science, and chemistry. Pupils will have access to the University’s research facilities and will participate in lectures and practical classes in the University’s specialist laboratories. The classes will be conducted by academic staff and doctoral students of the University of Wrocław. The cooperation will also include workshops and mentoring programmes led by university experts.

  • For the pupils of the Secondary School No. III, this is an opportunity to develop their scientific interests and personal potential.
  • For the University, it is a chance to work with the most talented pupils and prepare them for academic development and future national and international challenges, including subject-based Olympiads.
  • For the City of Wrocław, it represents an investment in young talent, an investment in the future of Academic Wrocław, and an investment in the city’s intellectual capital.

We are confident that this joint project will help increase interest in the sciences, stimulate intellectual curiosity, and encourage participation in academic competitions as well as the pursuit of STEM-related university studies.
