Submission of candidates for “Wrocław Freedom”
The badge of honour “Wrocław Freedom” is a distinction of particular importance to the University of Wrocław. It is a decoration awarded to heroes and heroines who, even in particularly difficult and unfavourable times, did not forget about freedom, truth, human rights, justice and solidarity.
Read the letter from the UWr Rector Robert Olkiewicz on this year’s edition of the award, which will be presented on 5 June.
Ladies and gentlemen,
The “Wrocław Freedom” badge of honour was established three years ago. It serves to honour those members of the University of Wrocław community (students and employees) who, before 1989, defended fundamental values such as freedom, truth, justice and human dignity. The badge can be awarded posthumously. Sixty-six people have received this award so far.
By awarding the badge, we express our collective gratitude for the freedom we can enjoy today. At the same time, we remind ourselves of the importance of these fundamental values, thereby strengthening our university community. Of great importance, therefore, is not only the act of awarding the badge and the ceremony associated with it, but also the process of discovering and submitting candidates for the award. It requires the active participation of representatives of the current university community. The right to propose candidates is held by members of the Senate of the University of Wrocław, the Councils of Institutes and Faculties, groups of at least five university employees and persons who have been awarded the badge so far. The badge can be awarded posthumously. Sixty-six people have received this award so far.
I encourage you to get involved, to search for and submit candidates associated with your UWr organisational units. This year’s edition of the award, unlike previous ones, is not linked to the anniversary of specific events. All applications will be considered, irrespective of the period to which the candidates’ freedom activities were related.
Applications will be examined by a jury composed of prof. dr hab. Jan Sobczyk – chairman, dr Tadeusz Jakubowski, Renata Otolińska, Paweł Skrzywanek, dr hab. Bożena Szaynok, prof. UWr – members.
Please find the application form attached. Please send completed forms to rektor@uwr.edu.pl or submit in person at the Rector’s Office. Due to the planned timing of the ceremony, please submit nominations for the current edition of the award by 15 April 2024.
Yours sincerely
prof. dr hab. Robert Olkiewicz
