Success of prof. Michał Jacuński’s project

European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) chose 60 new Actions, which will be granted with a four-year funding for creating and managing international research networks. Among chosen projects there is only one Action from Poland, submitted by prof. Michał Jacuński from the Institute of Political Science, University of Wrocław.

The chosen project under the name of “Regaining linkage? Digital technologies improving civic engagement, political organisations and democracy” involves the creation of an international research network which would intensify the researchers’ efforts from various fields and countries around two specified problems:

(1) How can democracies regain and rebuild the connection between citizens and representative institutions, benefiting from the use of digital technology?

(2) How political can organisations and digitally marginalised groups link together, considering politically active groups (elderly people), and digitally active but politically marginalised groups (young citizens)?

For the period of 4 years, COST will be funding the following activities: meetings, workshops and conferences, grants for postgraduates and young researchers to participate in conferences, short-term research visits, training schools, and popularisation-related activities and publications.

During the project formulation phase, the research network proposal was supported by 30 researchers from 17 COST member countries and a Cooperating Member (Israel).

Prof. Michał Jacuński, the coordinator of the project, emphasises the fact that gaining the funding was extremely challenging. The application was submitted three times. The success rate of submitted applications the last time was only 11.5%.
