Success of UWr scientists in Nature Index 2023!

In the latest edition of the Nature Index 2023 scientific publication ranking, the University of Wrocław secured the third position among Polish academic institutions. The first place in Poland was claimed by the University of Warsaw, while the Jagiellonian University held the second position. Following the University of Wrocław, the subsequent positions were occupied by the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań and Wrocław University of Science and Technology.

Our university ranks 196th among all European academic institutions listed in the Nature Index.

The Nature Index is a database collecting information on the affiliations of authors of scientific publications and research collaborations. The Index tracks contributions to scientific publications in 82 of the most prestigious scientific journals in the fields of exact and natural sciences, selected by an independent group of researchers. The ranking is compiled by Nature Portfolio, the publisher of the renowned scientific journal Nature. It presents both the absolute number of articles published in the aforementioned journals by scientists from different countries and scientific institutions (referred to as “Count”), as well as the indicator concerning the percentage share of co-authorship in a given publication (referred to as “Share”).

For each article, 1 point (Count) is assigned to the country and institution of the researcher as a credit for being a co-author of the respective article. The Share indicator is calculated in such a way that each article receives 1 point to be distributed among the co-authors. It is assumed that each scientist contributed equally to the creation of the publication. Therefore, if an article has 10 authors, each of them receives 0.1 points (Share).

The 2023 ranking presents the results of affiliations pertaining to articles published between January 1, 2022, and December 31, 2022. The results are also presented in a breakdown by specific scientific fields of study, namely physical sciences, chemistry, earth and environmental sciences, and biological sciences.

In the year 2022, scientists from the University of Wrocław published 51 articles in prestigious journals listed by Nature Portfolio, while the Share Indicator for UWr stood at 15.75.

Our chemists published the highest number of articles, a remarkable 22 in total. The articles within the field of chemical sciences also achieved the highest Share indicator among the publications by UWr researchers, reaching 10.69. Physicists secured the second position with 20 articles, while biologists claimed the third position with 8 articles published in journals listed by Nature Research.
