The 20th Polish-Belarusian Scientific and Practical Round Table

The jubilee, 20th Polish-Belarusian Scientific and Practical Round Table, titled “Kształtowanie społeczeństwa obywatelskiego na Białorusi a polskie doświadczenia transformacyjne” (eng. “The Relation between Shaping the Civil Society of Belarus and Polish Experiences with Democratic Transformation”), will take place on Friday, November 3. The event will be held at 9 a.m. at the University of Wrocław’s Institute of International and Security Studies at the Faculty of Social Sciences located at ul. Koszarowa 3, room 114. The co-organisers of the event are the Municipal Office of Wrocław and the Free Belarus University Foundation.

Considering that this year’s edition of the Round Table will happen during the time of deepening of the political crisis in Belarus and a further isolation of the society from the country’s national institutions, the international forums that allow for dialogue and exchanging knowledge, experiences and outlooks between the academic communities of both countries serve a particularly important role.

The theme of this year’s 20th edition of the Round Table is shaping the civil society of Belarus and reflecting on Polish experiences with the democratic transformation after 1989. The participants will analyse the role of educational institutions, independent non-governmental organisations, the media, and local communities within the democratisation processes, as well as the challenges that the citizens of Belarus face in the context of repression and forced migration.

Another aim of the event is to deepen the cooperation between Polish and Belarusian researchers by presenting the current research projects and educational initiatives. Special attention will be paid to the experiences of Polish institutional reforms and the possibility of adapting them to Belarusian conditions, as well as to the mutual actions which support the growth of civil society in the region.

The Round Table remains one of the last continuous forums of academic dialogue between Poland and Belarus – its 20th, jubilee edition is a crucial element of strengthening this form of partnership between both countries.

During the opening ceremony of the 20th Polish-Belarusian Scientific and Practical Round Table a foreword will be given by:

His Magnificence, Rector of the University of Wrocław, prof. dr hab Robert Olkiewicz.

Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, dr hab. Magdalena Ratajczak, prof. UWr.

Director of the Institute of International and Security Studies, dr hab. Krzysztof Kociubiński, prof. UWr.

The languages which will be used during the event are Polish and Belarusian.

The organisers invite all to participate in the Round Table. For those unable to attend in person, the event will also be transmitted via MS Teams. The link will be made available soon.
