The Centre for Spoken Polish invites to a master class lecture

The Centre for Spoken Polish invites to a master class by dr hab. Michał Głuszkowski, prof. UMK entitled “Od przełączania kodów do kodu mieszanego. Przypadek bilingwizmu staroobrzędowców w Polsce”. The online lecture will take place on 10.05.2024, at 18.00.

Despite several hundred years of presence in the Polish lands, Old Believers – descendants of Russian religious refugees from the late 17th century. – preserved not only their religion and culture, but also their language, and to this day many members of this group are bilingual. Switching occurs mainly from the less mastered Russian dialect to the better-known Polish language. In similar situations, one possible scenario is the complete abandonment of the minority language (linguistic switching), but it is also possible to transform the weaker language into a mixed code. Such a situation is observed in the bilingualism of Old Believers in north-eastern Poland. It does not affect all members of the community equally. In the presentation, we will look at examples of utterances representing a mixed code (Russian-Polish hybrid system) and discuss the social and individual factors that foster such linguistic behaviour.

The event takes place as part of the “Wykłady w Pracowni Polszczyzny Mówionej” series. The lecture will be held in Polish.
