The Library of the University of Wrocław joins the National Library Resource!

As of 15 May 2025, by virtue of a regulation issued by the Minister of Culture and National Heritage, Hanna Wróblewska, the Library of the University of Wrocław has been officially included among the institutions holding collections classified as part of the National Library Resource (NZB).

This is a significant distinction, confirming the unique historical, scholarly, artistic, and cultural value of our collections. The NZB comprises resources that form an invaluable part of the national heritage and are granted special legal protection.

The Library’s application was previously positively assessed by the NZB Council, which recommended the inclusion of the special collections, notably:

  • The collection of incunabula – as many as 3,156 works from the transition between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
  • Bibliotheca Piastorum Bregensis – 5,309 works from the former library of the Dukes of Legnica and Brzeg.
  • The only surviving original copy in the world of the first map of the entire Tsardom of Russia, created by Anthony Jenkinson in 1562.
  • Description de l’Égypte – the monumental work commissioned by Napoleon Bonaparte and created by the Commission des sciences et arts d’Égypte, resulting from the research of around 160 scholars and artists during their expedition to Africa between 1798 and 1801.

Thanks to this decision, the National Library Resource now includes the collections of 17 libraries across Poland – from the Jagiellonian Library, through the National Library, to the Pomeranian Library in Szczecin.

This is not only a source of pride but also a mark of recognition for the efforts of librarians, conservators, and all those committed to preserving these treasures for future generations.

It is an important step towards safeguarding and promoting our shared heritage!
