The many faces of logic – a conversation with mathematician prof. Ludomir Newelski

To mark World Logic Day on 14 January, prof. Ludomir Newelski from the Mathematical Institute at the University of Wrocław was a guest on Radio Wrocław. We highly recommend this conversation to anyone curious about what logic means in theory — and how it functions in practice

The interview offers answers to many thought-provoking questions:

  • What does it mean to think logically? And can it be learned?
  • How can we improve the tools necessary for sound argumentation?
  • What is the connection between logic and precise expression?
  • Are emotions the enemy of logical thinking?
  • And, perhaps most intriguingly — is the world itself logical?

World Logic Day is celebrated on 14 January — a date chosen not by chance. On this day, Alfred Tarski (1901–1983) was born, and Kurt Gödel (1906–1978) passed away — two of the most influential logicians of the 20th century.

Prof. Ludomir Newelski is an alumnus of Secondary School No. 14 in Wrocław. In 1977, as a second-year student, he became one of the school’s first laureates of the Polish Mathematical Olympiad.

He later studied mathematics at the University of Wrocław and earned his degree there. In 2001, he was awarded the Foundation for Polish Science Prize in the field of exact sciences “for groundbreaking work in mathematical logic, particularly in model theory and algebra.”

In 2022, he was elected a corresponding member of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN).

We would like to thank Radio Wrocław for providing the recording, and extend our appreciation to journalists Ida Górska, Tomasz Wołodźko, and Krzysztof Janos for conducting such an engaging interview.
