The Sun and the space weather – a lecture by prof. Brigitte Schmieder
The University of Wrocław’s Astronomical Institute invites everybody to an open lecture by prof. Brigitte Schmieder from Observatoire de Paris (France) – a brilliant researcher who studies the Sun’s physics and the phenomena occurring within its atmosphere. The event is organized as part of the Excellence Initiative – Research University (IDUB).
The lecture will be held on 13 April 2026 at 1 p.m. at the UWr Astronomical Institute in the Margentaler Room (ground floor) at ul. Mikołaja Kopernika 11.
The lecture “Our active Sun controls the Space Weather” will be focused on the role of solar activity on the so-called “space weather” and its influence on the space around the planet and technologies used on Earth.
Prof. Brigette Schmieder is a renowned heliophysicist from Observatoire de Paris. Her specialization is research on The Sun, particularly the plasma physics, magnetic activity, and phenomena occurring in the active Sun regions. She also studies space weather and the reasons for its changeability.
Prof. Brigette Schmieder is an author of over 600 scientific publications, about 350 of which have been published in international peer-reviewed journals. Her research has been cited over 12 000 times. Apart from Observatoire de Paris, her main place of work, prof. Brigette Schmieder has also worked as a guest professor at the Belgian KU Leuven and The University of Oslo in Norway.
Prof. Schmieder works together with numerous scientists from leading research centers in many countries, such as the USA, the UK, Poland, the Czech Republic, Japan, China, India, Belgium, and Norway. Prof. Brigitte Schmieder has also organized and co-organized almost 30 scientific conferences and courses for students. She has been an advisor or co-advisor of a dozen of bachelor’s theses, master’s theses, and PhD theses. For her work, prof. Schmieder has received numerous honors, such as L’Ordre des Palmes académiques, andOfficier de la Légion d’honneur.
The lecture is organized by the Incubator of Scientific Excellence – The Activity of the Sun and the Stars, operating as part of IDUB and the Department of Physics and Astronomy. We warmly invite everybody interested in astronomy, solar physics, and space weather.
