The University of Wrocław advanced in THE World University Rankings

The University of Wrocław advanced this year in one of the most important international university rankings – Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2024 – from between 1201-1500 to 1001-1200 of the best universities in the world. It gave our university the 5th place in our country, ex aequo with several other universities. We are the best in Research Environment category, in which we achieved 574th place in the world. We also did well in International Outlook category, achieving 985th place in the world and 3rd place in Poland.

We were preceded by the Jagiellonian University, the University of Warsaw, and the Wrocław Medical University (the above-mentioned were in the group of 601-800 best), and by the Medical University of Łódź (801-1000). 37 universities from Poland were classified in THE WUR this year, in comparison to 32 universities last time.

The first place in the ranking was achieved by the University of Oxford, the second place – by Stanford University. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology took the third place.

Times Higher Education World University Rankings is one of the most prestigious and the biggest rankings of higher education institutions, evaluating over 2,000 universities in the world. This year, there were 1,904 institutions on the ranking list of the 20th edition – over 100 more than the year before.

THE WUR ranking compares universities which carry out scholarly activity, considering their most important objectives: didactics, studies, knowledge transfer, and internationalisation.

The universities are rated in five catgories and each category has percentage weighting, influencing the overall result:

1. Teaching (didactics): 29.5%

2. Research Envirnonment (productivity, reputation, and revenue assigned to studies): 29%

3. Research Quality (scientific expertise, research impact, citations): 30%

4. International Outlook (international staff, students, and studies): 7.5%

5. Industry (patents and revenue from commercial activity): 4%.

Each of these categories comprises 18 factors overall.

Times Higher Education uses the data for creating its ranking from several sources: surveys filled by universities, Scopus bibliographical base (publications and citations), and university reputation evaluation carried out by THE among scholars from all over the world.
