The University of Wrocław set sail on the Baltic!

On 19 August 2023, the University of Wrocław’s 9-day full-time Baltic cruise on the classic gaff-rigged ketch STS Generał Zaruski came to an end.

This beautiful 25-metre wooden yacht, the only one of its kind in Poland and one of the few in Europe, is owned by the people of Gdańsk. The sailing ship’s mission is to promote maritime education for young people and adults, in line with the idea of the pioneer of Polish seafaring, General Mariusz Zaruski.

On board the yacht, students and staff from the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy, the Faculty of Earth and Environmental Sciences, the Faculty of Historical and Pedagogical Sciences and UWr administrative staff developed their maritime skills as a school crew. During the voyage on the Gdańsk-Rostock-Borhholm-Christiansø-Szczecin route, the UWr crew performed navigation and galley watches, slept little, underwent seasickness and made friends for life.

We would like to thank Captain Jerzy Jaszczuk and the officers’ staff for a wonderful adventure, and prof. Tomasz Greczyło for organising the voyage. We invite you to enjoy the photos.
