On Easter Monday, you are warmly invited from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (leaving by 6 p.m.) to join us for a family walk in the Botanical Garden of the University of Wrocław to enjoy some quality time with your loved ones.
We would like to remind you that entrance for UWr employees is 1 PLN, while Mondays for students and doctoral students of our University are free.
1 April, the start of the season at the Botanical Garden coincides this year with a public holiday Monday.
What plants are associated with the symbolism of Easter? Who knows, maybe you will find them in our Garden?
PULSATILLA (pasque flower) – a symbol of resurrection, a mountain plant which, after a long winter, comes back to life in spring. The dye contained in the flowers was formerly used to colour Easter eggs. Remember that pasqueflowers are protected and cannot be harvested from natural sites.
PASSIFLORA (passion flowers or passion vines) – “flower of the Lord’s passion” – the Latin name of the plant is derived from the words passio-suffering and flos-flower. Christian scholars find references to the religious scene of Christ’s passion in the individual parts of the flower.
WILLOW – willow branches are used to make palms for Palm Sunday, they are commonly found in Christmas decorations and symbolise life that is reborn despite difficult conditions (willow often blossoms when the weather is not yet favourable). In the past, one of the rituals of Easter Monday, apart from being doused with water, was to hit the legs with willow sticks.
BUXUS (boxwood) – a symbol of immortality and longevity of life, this is related to the fact that boxwood bushes are evergreen and do not lose their leaves during the winter. Used to decorate Easter baskets. Boxwood was also used to make wreaths and hang them on doors to ward off “evil spirits”.
VINCA – used to decorate Easter baskets, the blue flowers bloom in spring, the plant symbolises the feminine divinity or Mary.
HIPPOPHAE RHAMNOIDES (sea-buckthorn) – symbol of the Passion of Christ – crown of thorns, very thorny plant, small shrub or tree with edible fruit (rich in vitamin C ).
OLEA – a symbol of unity and peace, so necessary in human relations.
ALOE – included in fragrant ointments and oils together with myrrh (bark of the Commiphora -balsam plant)and olive tree oil, in biblical times used to embalm a corpse (probably also the body of Jesus), therefore aloe vera is a symbol of death and redemption.
We look forward to seeing you!
