Transformation of the EU’s external borders in the context of a changing world order
The Centre for Regional and Borderlands Studies at the Institute of Sociology, University of Wrocław, and the University of the Greater Region Center for Border Studies (University of Luxembourg) cordially invite you to the second lecture in the series “Border Realities: Transformation of the Border and New Conceptual Challenges.”
The lecture, delivered in English, will take place online on 26 October 2022 from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. It will be given by Jarosław Jańczak (Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań / European University Viadrina).
Professor Jarosław Jańczak is a political scientist, European studies scholar, and border researcher. His academic interests focus on borders and border regions in the context of European integration processes, particularly phenomena such as debordering and rebordering, cross-border governance, European integration at the micro level, the EU’s external borders, and cross-border cooperation in Europe. EU Geopolitics: Transformation of the EU’s External Borders in the Context of a Changing World Order
Ongoing changes in the structure of the global order — especially in recent years — have meant that border-related processes in Europe are unfolding within a new international environment. Migration crises have led to restrictions along many European borders. During the COVID-19 pandemic, tendencies towards (re)closing and tightening borders continued. Somewhat paradoxically, the war in Ukraine opened borders in the region to refugees, while simultaneously prompting a reassessment of prevailing approaches to border dynamics in European international relations.
The lecture aims to discuss new approaches to studying border dynamics in Europe, to revisit traditional perspectives in international relations, and to connect them with the until-recently dominant frameworks in border studies.
