University of Wrocław and the Educational Research Institute are co-developing the microcredentials project

Prof. dr hab. Robert Olkiewicz, the rector of the University of Wrocław, and project leader from the Educational Research Institute, Michał Nowakowski, have inaugurated a collaboration as part of the project “Microcredentials – piloting a new solution to support lifelong learning” (Polish: „Mikropoświadczenia – pilotaż nowego rozwiązania wspierającego uczenie się przez całe życie”) funded by the European Union within the European Funds for Social Development programme 2021-2027. (FERS).

The aim of the project is to analyse whether microcredentials are helpful in developing skills in line with the concept of lifelong learning, and to formulate the process of collecting and issuing them. Owing to its involvement in the project, the University of Wrocław plays an active role in creating fresh solutions for designing, describing, certifying, and ensuring the credibility of microcredentials. The university also has an opinion-forming role in setting national standards for their description.

As part of the collaboration with the Educational Research Institute, the University of Wrocław Centre for Distance Learning has issued the first microcredential in the information and communications technology area (ICT). The course “Digital learning – multimedia for didactics” (Polish: “Edukacja cyfrowa – multimedia w dydaktyce”) confirms the acquisition of practical skills in creating interactive presentations in PowerPoint and Sway, as well as in effective team management on Microsoft Teams.

The participants of the course have been granted digital certificates via an innovative app Odznaka+ – the first platform in Poland that allows issuing, storing, and sharing microcredentials and digital badges in the Open Badges 2.0 standard. This solution enables users to accurately confirm their career skills, achievements, and experiences, and to display the received badges in recruitment processes or on social media, even before finishing a full learning cycle.

Soon, thanks to the ongoing collaboration with the Educational Research Institute, digital badges confirming acquired skills will be granted for other modes of learning offered by the University of Wrocław – including courses, trainings, and post-graduate studies.
