University of Wrocław as a partner of the 23rd Millennium Docs Against Gravity Festival

Millenium Docs Against Gravity Festival, one of the most important documentary film festivals is approaching. Between 8 and 17 May, more than eighty documentary films from around the world will be screened at the DCF cinema. The University of Wrocław is a partner of this year’s edition of the event.

Representing the University of Wrocław in this year’s program are:

  • dr hab. Dorota Koczanowicz, prof. UWr from the Institute of Cultural Studies, who will host the discussion “The Strength of Women, the Strength of Taste” following the screening of “The Fifth Season”. The documentary takes audiences on a journey through the kitchens of five Italian female chefs, where tradition meets new possibilities. After the screening viewers will meet three Wrocław-based female chefs whose restaurants were recognised in the 2025 Michelin Guide. The discussion will focus on their own “fifth seasons”, their passion for flavour, and the role of feminism in redefining cuisine and the position of woman in the culinary industry,
  • – dr hab. Mateusz Świetlicki, prof. UWr from the Institute of English Studies, who will participate in the discussion “Fahrenheit 451: The Temperature of the Culture War” following the screening of “The Librarians”. The documentary addresses the struggle for democracy and free access to information. It is in American school libraries that an unprecedented wave of book bans, largely concerning race-related issues and LGBT+ topics- first emerged. Librarians and their allies now stand on the front line of the conflict over freedom of speech. The discussion will address the sources of moral panic surrounding certain cultural content, contemporary forms of censorship, as well as the power of ideas and storytelling.

The full program is available on the Festival website.
