Excellent result of UWr in the Nature Index 2022!

In the latest edition of the Nature Index 2022, the University of Wrocław was ranked 5th among Polish institutions, and 4th among Polish universities. Polish Academy of Sciences was ranked first, followed by the University of Warsaw, the Jagiellonian University in Cracow and Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań. Our university is ranked 190th among all European institutions on the Nature Index.

The Nature Index is a database collecting information about authors’ affiliations of scientific publications and research collaborations. The index tracks contributions to scientific publications in 82 of the most prestigious scientific journals in science and life sciences, selected by an independent group of researchers.

The ranking is compiled by Nature Research, publisher of the leading science journal Nature. It presents both the absolute number of articles published in these journals by scientists from individual countries and scientific institutions (the so-called Count), as well as an indicator regarding the percentage of co-authorship of a given publication (the so-called Share).

For each article co-authored by a researcher from a given country or institution, the country or institution receives 1 point (Count). The Share indicator is calculated so that each article receives 1 point to be shared among the co-authors. It is assumed that each researcher has contributed equally to the publication. Thus, if an article has 10 authors, each author receives 0.1 points (Share).  The results are also presented by scientific discipline, i.e. Physical Sciences, Chemistry, Earth and Environmental Sciences and Life Sciences.

The 2022 ranking presents the affiliation results of articles published between 1 January 2021 and 31 December 2021. The results are also presented by individual scientific discipline, i.e. Physical Sciences, Chemistry, Earth and Environmental Sciences and Life Sciences.

In 2021, researchers from the University of Wrocław published 62 articles in journals on the prestigious Nature Research list, while the Share index was 15.86. The highest Share index was obtained in the field of Chemistry, that is 9.37. In terms of Chemistry publications, UWr ranks fourth among Polish scientific institutions (ahead of PAN, UW and UJ). Life Sciences also fared well – 5th in Poland. The largest number of articles, 32, were published last year by physicists.
