The THE WUR compares research-intensive universities, assessing them against their core missions: teaching, research, knowledge transfer and internationalisation.
Universities are evaluated across five key areas, each with a specific weighting contributing to the overall score:
- Teaching – 29.5%
- Research Environment (productivity, reputation, and research income) – 29%
- Research Quality (academic excellence, research impact, and citations) – 30%
- International Outlook (international staff, students, and research) – 7.5%
- Industry (patents and income from commercial activities) – 4%
Each of these categories is composed of several indicators—18 in total.
Data for the ranking are drawn from multiple sources: institutional submissions by universities, the Scopus bibliometric database (publications and citations), and global academic reputation surveys conducted by Times Higher Education among scholars worldwide.
