UWr scholars are leaders among Polish researchers: Nature Index 2024

In the latest edition of the Nature Index 2024 Research Leaders ranking of scientific publications (previously published under the name Nature Index Annual Tabels), the University of Wrocław was again ranked third among Polish universities. Our chemists, meanwhile, were ranked first among all scientists from Polish universities publishing in chemistry.

Such high places in this prestigious list are a huge success for our scientists! We are proud and heartily congratulate you!

The ranking leaders maintained their last year’s positions. First place in Poland was again taken by Warsaw University, with Jagiellonian University in second place. UWr was followed by Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań and Wrocław University of Science and Technology.

Our university is ranked 156th among all European universities that are on the Nature Index.

Nature Index is a database that collects information about the affiliations of authors of scientific publications and research collaborations. The index tracks contributions to scientific publications in 145 of the most prestigious scientific journals in the sciences and life sciences, selected by an independent group of researchers. The ranking is compiled by Springer Nature, publisher of the leading science journal Nature, among others. It shows both the absolute number of articles published in the above-mentioned journals by scientists from individual countries and scientific institutions (the so-called Count) and an indicator concerning the percentage of co-authorship of a given publication (the so-called Share).

For each article co-authored by a researcher from a given country or institution, that country or institution receives 1 point (Count). The Share index is calculated in such a way that each article receives 1 point, to be divided among the co-authors. Each researcher is assumed to have contributed equally to the publication. So if an article has 10 authors, each author gets 0.1 points (Share).

The 2024 ranking presents the affiliation results of articles published between 1 January 2023 and 31 December 2023. The results are also presented by scientific discipline, i.e. physical sciences, chemistry, earth and environmental sciences, and biological sciences.

In 2023, researchers from the University of Wrocław published 70 articles in prestigious journals that are on the Nature Research list, while the Share index for UWr was 22.30. Last year, the Count index was 51, and Share was 15.75.

Researchers from the University of Wrocław are ranked first among scientists from all Polish universities in the chemical sciences. In the field of chemistry, the University of Wrocław’s Share index was 19.10. In 2023, our chemists published 33 articles in journals that are on the Nature Index list. UWr physicists have published 31 articles included in this list. Other UWr publications included in the Nature Index are articles in the biological sciences (4) and medical sciences (2).
