UWr with a patent for a new invention!

Polish Patent Office issued a decision for giving a patent on the P.436311 invention called „Krzemianowy związek o strukturze hydroksyapatytu domieszkowany jonami srebra, sposób jego wytwarzania i zastosowanie” [Silicate compound of hydroxyapatite structure doped with silver ions, methods of production, and its use]. University of Wrocław is jointly entitled to the invention.

The inventors are dr Agata Piecuch, dr. hab Rafał Ogórek, and dr Katarzyna Przywara from the Department of Mycology and Genetics at the Faculty of Biological Sciences at the University of Wrocław.

The intellectual work of the invention is the production method and anti-fungal effect of hydroxyapatites doped with silver ions (the dopant dose oscillates between 1, 2.5, or 5%). The examined hydroxyapatites show high anti-fungal effects against clinical and reference Candida sp., Cryptococcus sp., Trichosporon sp., and Rhodotorula sp. strains. The possibility of using the anti-fungal effects of hydroxyapatites in bone and dental cavities against fungi responsible for hospital-acquired infections possesses real, significant, therapeutic benefits.

Except for University of Wrocław, the Włodzimierz Trzebiatowski Institute of Low Temperature and Structure Research in Wrocław is also jointly entitled to the invention.

Both facilities signed an agreement of joint ownership which settles mutual responsibilities regarding patent protection and provides for commercial cooperation.

Congratulations!
