Will artificial intelligence rule the world?

Let me not take up the challenge of predicting the future. Artificial intelligence has brought us a lot of great things so far – better cures for cancer, beautiful chess. Perhaps AI will soon be proving mathematical theorems that humans have been unable to prove for centuries.

But at the same time, artificial intelligence is also about dangers. How did Batman ultimately catch the Joker in The Dark Knight? He hacked into all the phones in the city and created a 3D sonar image of Gotham City. And that’s how he found the Joker. Two years ago, a group of scientists in Pittsburgh managed to program an ordinary router that many people have in their flat and create such a three-dimensional image of the space. So it is not impossible that next-generation viruses will not only steal our money, but, for example, hack into our router, phone or any other device that emits electromagnetic waves and be able to create a 3D image of what we are currently doing at home. Probably not many of us would be comfortable with this….

Something that was fiction fifteen years ago is becoming quite real today. As such, it is worth preparing for what may be coming. AI is a very powerful tool that will become even more powerful with time. If you would like to understand how GPT chatbots, or other modern artificial intelligence algorithms, work, the University of Wroclaw is a great place to do so. Among the key scientists behind the creation of the GPT chatbot are two graduates of our university. And I believe this is no coincidence.

Don’t believe the myths, trust the science!

dr Marek Adamczyk

Dr Marek Adamczyk is a theoretical computer scientist. He works on algorithms that predict the future. The problems he deals with in his research are combinatorial in nature, but also include probability theory, stochastic optimisation, online optimisation, mechanism design and algorithmic game theory. Although he conducts basic and theoretical research, all the issues that lie within his field of interest are inspired by the practical needs of the business community.
