With the Czech language in Zlín – Czech Studies students on Erasmus+

In early June 2025, a group of second-year Czech Studies students from the University of Wrocław took part in a week-long study trip to Zlín in the Czech Republic. The trip was organised in partnership with Tomas Bata University – a modern institution with a strong international profile and deep roots in the region’s industrial heritage.

The classes held at the partner university were complemented by an intensive cultural programme. Students visited, among others, the Museum of South-East Moravia, the Baťa Skyscraper, the Tomas Bata Institute, the Villa of Tomáš Baťa, and the modernist housing district – a remarkable example of the fusion of functionalist architecture and a socially-minded vision of the ideal city.

The stay in Zlín allowed participants not only to test their Czech language skills in real-life situations, but also to gain a deeper understanding of Czech cultural heritage and the contribution of the Baťa family to the development of the region and the country. A special place in the programme was reserved for meetings with Czech lecturers and students, as well as for reflection on the contemporary significance of Baťa’s ideas in education and entrepreneurship.

The trip was organised by dr Magdalena Matkowska-Jerzyk and dr Kamila Woźniak from the Department of Bohemistics at the University of Wrocław, in collaboration with dr Jan Herman from Tomas Bata University in Zlín.

This visit marked yet another step – alongside academic cooperation – in the development of ties between our institutions and served as proof that studying Czech philology is not only about acquiring linguistic knowledge, but also a real opportunity to experience a neighbouring country up close.

Studying Czech is worth it – it’s a field that leads not only to books, but also to people, places, and ideas.

Reruitment is now open!
