Wrocław and Opole universities together for green energy

Universities from Lower Silesia and Opolian Silesia want to lower carbon footprint, generate green energy and increase energy efficiency, as well as develop a solar power plant.

Following the initiative issued by the region’s two biggest universities, the University of Wrocław and the Wrocław University of Science and Technology, a letter of intent establishing the Interuniversity Green Energy Group has been signed on the 10th of November at the University of Wrocław. The group will jointly apply for EU funds related to renewable energy, so as to become producers of green energy. The contributing universities are:

University of Wrocław, Wrocław University of Science and Technology, Karol Lipinski Academy of Music in Wrocław, Wroclaw Medical University, Wroclaw University of Environmental and Life Sciences, Wroclaw University of Economics and Business, Eugeniusz Geppert Academy of Art and Design, Wroclaw University of Health and Sport Sciences, University of Opole, Opole University of Technology.

Chair of the Collegium of Rectors of Wrocław and Opole Universities, the Karol Lipinski Academy of Music, rector prof. Krystian Kiełb expressed gratitude for the initiative towards the rector of the University of Wrocław, prof. Robert Olkiewicz. He also stated: I wish us all that the project can be realised according to our plans, so that in the future we can remember this moment as one of great significance for all our universities.

Asset Development and Maintenance Director at the University of Wrocław and one of the originators of the initiative, Damian Mroczyński, stated: We should not only be energy consumers, but become energy producers. Together with the Wrocław University of Science and Technology, we thought of creating a group producing green energy. Today, the first such a large group of universities in Poland, and perhaps even in Europe, has been created with such a powerful energy volume, which will produce energy from its own solar power plants or wind power plants, as well as aim for zero-emission.

Administrative Director at the Wrocław University of Science and Technology and the university’s project initiator added: As soon as the letter of intent has been signed, we can officially start operating. We want to establish the legal existence of the group, determine in which form we will operate and obtain funding from the European Union. The war in Ukraine and the energy crisis have triggered huge EU programmes from which funding will be available. These programmes will also force universities into all sorts of green initiatives, including renewable energy.
